Fenêtres Concept - Large Windows (Advantages and/or Disadvantages)
Who doesn’t dream of owning a home with large windows?
Having large windows means enjoying a connection with the outdoors. It allows you to take in the views and landscapes while staying protected from the elements inside. Large windows invite natural light and the warmth of the sun’s rays into your home.
While large windows are wonderful, they come with some considerations. First, they tend to be more expensive, and it's crucial to ensure they're well-insulated and ideally positioned, preferably south-facing, to make the most of the sun’s warmth. A large north-facing window, for example, will be much harder to keep warm.
Another factor to keep in mind is that larger windows can be more challenging—and costly—to dress. A large roller shade, for instance, might require an assisted lift system due to the weight of the fabric. Similarly, for motorized shades, the bigger the window, the heavier the fabric, which means a stronger (and pricier) motor will be needed.
When it comes to curtains, there’s also the issue of fabric availability. Beyond a certain height, finding longer sheer fabric lengths can become difficult or almost impossible. While most fabric companies offer rolls up to 108'' or 120'', larger windows might require curtains as long as 165'', which are much more rare and more expensive, though a few companies in Quebec do provide them.
Among the many benefits of large windows, the visual connection to nature stands out. This connection, essential for well-being, is a key part of what’s known as biophilia. Incorporating a biophilic design in your home involves carefully choosing the size and placement of your windows.
Large windows bring you closer to nature, enhancing productivity, reducing stress, and boosting creativity. From a design perspective, they demand a special finish—free from mouldings—to make the windows the focal point of the home’s decor.
With large windows, you live in harmony with the seasons. The windows act as living works of art, showcasing the ever-changing beauty of nature. One of Earth’s greatest gifts is its ability to renew itself year after year, offering us one of the most beautiful views imaginable.
